- Sets Z zero in seconds
- Fits 3018-PROVer, 3018-PRO
A conductive puck, a clip for the bit and a 2 m lead with a quick connector: the plain plate-style Z probe for a 3018-PRO, run from Candle on GRBL or from Mach3.
Setting Z by sliding paper under the bit works, but it is slow, varies from try to try and puts fingers near the collet. A touch probe replaces that ritual with a circuit. The bit comes down onto a metal puck, the circuit closes, and the controller notes the exact height.
The Zhong Hua Jiang probe is the plain version of that tool. It comes from Huajiang, a Chinese maker of CNC routers, spindle motors and inverters founded in 2000, whose Zhong Hua Jiang brand also sells a 3018-PRO machine and matching limit switches.
A one-click Z zero changes more than setup time. It makes Z repeatable between tool changes, which matters for any job with more than one bit. A pocket cut with a flat end mill and finished with a V-bit only lines up if both bits share the same zero.
Where a probe sits in the order of upgrades is set out in 3018 upgrades.

The routine is the same on wood, plastic and board. Jog the bit a few millimetres above the stock, set the puck under it, clip the lead to the bit and run the probe cycle. The spindle stays off throughout.
Material habits:
| Stock | Probe on | Offset |
|---|---|---|
| MDF, plywood | Puck on the surface | Measured puck height |
| Acrylic | Puck on film or bare, consistently | Puck height |
| Copper-clad | Copper directly | Zero |
Starting feeds for these materials are gathered in what a 3018 cuts.
Many 3018-PRO boards run GRBL on an Arduino-class chip and carry a 2-pin probe header. The probe's quick connector plugs there. Mach3 setups take the probe on a motion controller's probe input and enable it in the software's pin settings.
On a GRBL 3018-PRO:
If it misbehaves:
For Mach3, map the probe to the input used by the motion card and test it in the diagnostics screen before running the probe script. Sender choices for GRBL are compared in 3018 CNC software.
Three probes cover most 3018s, and the choice follows the board. The Zhong Hua Jiang and SainSmart probes are both plate-and-clip designs for 2-pin probe inputs. Genmitsu's photoelectric probe uses a powered 3-pin lead and suits a different generation of machine.
| Probe | Machines | Trigger | Stands out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zhong Hua Jiang | 3018-PRO | Plate and clip | 2 m lead, quick connector, Mach3 and Candle |
| SainSmart Z probe | 3018-PRO, 3018-PROVer, PROVer Mach3 | Plate and clip | Genmitsu's match for older frames |
| Genmitsu photoelectric probe | 3018-PROVer V2, 3020, 4040 | Optical, with lights | No clip, works with coated bits |
| Essential Accessories Kit | PROVer, PROVer Mach3, MX3 | Plate and clip | Adds an E-stop and six switches |
Before ordering, check:
On a generic 3018-PRO or a Zhong Hua Jiang machine, this probe is the simple, matched choice. The long lead is its practical edge over shorter-cabled rivals on frames where the board sits at the back.
A plate probe also teaches good habits. Clipping onto a clean shank, probing slowly and measuring the puck once are the same steps any tool setter needs, so moving to a pricier probe later means changing hardware, not relearning the routine.
Pair it with limit switches and homing, and the probe's Z zero can be saved as a work offset that survives a restart. Without homing, re-probe after every power cycle.
Store the puck in a clean box between jobs. A scratched or dusty face reads as extra height, and the error only shows when a V-carve comes out a shade too wide.
Yes. It works with GRBLControl (Candle) and with Mach3.
About 200 cm, ending in a quick-wiring connector.
Measure the puck with calipers and enter that figure. The maker gives about 20 mm, but a measured value is more exact.
The PROVer V2 uses a 3-pin probe port; Genmitsu's photoelectric probe is the one made for it.
The circuit never closed: the clip is off, the lead is in the wrong header, or a dirty collet is blocking the signal.
