Two packs, two clamp designs

Pinning a 40 mm pine block under a Genmitsu mini hold-down

The Genmitsu T-track mini hold-down is a top clamp. A slot block drops into the bed's T-slot, an arm reaches over the edge of the stock, and a hand knob pulls the arm down until the blank cannot move.

Top pressure is what a thick blank wants. A 40 mm pine block for a relief carving or a deep pocket takes a lot of sideways load as the bit plunges and steps over, and a clamp pushing it into the bed resists that load through friction across the whole underside. The 2-pack clamp opens to 1.77 inches, which is 45 mm of stock.

A setup that holds on the first try:

  1. Slide the slot blocks into the T-slots on either side of the blank.
  2. Rest each arm on the stock with its heel on a packing block of the same height, so the arm sits level.
  3. Turn the knobs finger-tight, then a quarter turn more.
  4. Push the blank with your thumb. If it creeps, move the clamps closer to the corners.

Knob tightening is the practical part. Swapping stock between jobs takes seconds and no wrench, and the aluminium body will not gouge the bed.

Clamp as close to the cut as the toolpath allows. An arm reaching 30 mm onto the stock holds far better than one gripping 5 mm of the edge.
  • Relief carving in pine or basswood: two clamps on opposite ends of the blank.
  • Deep pockets in hardwood: four clamps, one near each corner.
  • Drilling a row of holes: clamps either side of the hole line keep the blank from lifting when the bit retracts.

The first cuts on a 3018 nearly all start with a blank held this way.

Two Genmitsu packs, two different clamps inside

The 2-pack and the 4-pack share a name and a job, but they are not the same clamp. Genmitsu builds them from different alloys to different sizes, and they open to different heights.

The 2-pack has the longer reach and opens further. It suits thick hardwood blanks, tall aluminium bar and anything close to the 45 mm Z travel of a 3018-PRO.

Zinc alloys are far denser than aluminium, so the 6061 body weighs less for its size. Its longer arm also spreads the knob's pressure over more of the blank, which helps on heavy roughing passes in aluminium bar.

The 4-pack trades capacity for count. Four shorter clamps hold a thin panel at every corner, which matters more on plywood and acrylic sheet than raw opening height.

  • Mostly 6–20 mm sheet goods: the 4-pack.
  • Mostly thick blocks for carving and pockets: the 2-pack.
  • Both kinds of stock: a 2-pack for blocks plus a set of side clamps for sheet.

Genmitsu sizes the slot block for its own 3018 series, and the 4-pack text says it fits other 3018 T-slot beds as well. Slot widths vary between makers, so measure the slot on a non-Genmitsu frame before relying on that.

The two packs are sold under one name. Read the pack size on the box, not the photo: the 2-pack is the 6061 clamp with 45 mm capacity.

Machines these clamps were drawn for include the Genmitsu 3018-PRO and the 3018-PROVer V2.

Plywood sheet, FR4 blanks and aluminium bar under a top clamp

A hold-down presses down on a small patch of stock, and that patch is off-limits to the bit. Each material handles that pressure differently, and each asks for its own placement.

  • Birch plywood sheet: clamp at the corners and keep the arms on waste. Sheet bows up in the middle, so a long panel may need a fifth hold point or a screw through the waste.
  • FR4 or FR1 copper-clad board: clamp lightly on the margins. Isolation milling cuts a fraction of a millimetre deep, so a board that lifts even slightly ruins the traces.
  • Aluminium bar and plate: clamp hard and close to the cut. The chatter from a small end mill in 6061 loosens anything that is only finger-tight.
  • Cast acrylic: put a scrap of card under each arm so the aluminium does not mark the polished face.
  • Hardwood with a finished face: the same card trick, or clamp on the side that becomes the back of the part.

Clearance is the part that catches people. The 2-pack body stands 50 mm tall and the 4-pack 56 mm, both taller than a typical blank, so the collet nut and spindle must travel over them or around them.

  1. Set the CAM clearance height above the clamp tops, not only above the stock.
  2. Check the machine's Z can rise that far; a 3018-PRO has 45 mm of Z travel.
  3. If it cannot, draw the clamps into the CAM file as keep-out zones and route around them.

Both Candle and UGS let you jog the spindle to each clamp before the run and confirm the clearance by eye; the 3018 software rundown covers where those jog controls sit.

Genmitsu hold-downs, LUNYEE clamps and a PETG kit compared

Four other workholding sets fight for the same T-slots. The right one depends on stock thickness, the bed and whether the top face has to stay clear.

The LUNYEE mini is the closest rival: nearly the same footprint, the same 45 mm capacity, and protective covers on the jaw. It is 12 mm taller, which costs clearance on a 45 mm Z machine.

Side clamps suit facing and engraving, where any arm over the stock is in the way. The PETG kit will not scratch a workpiece and bolts down with M6 hardware anywhere on a slotted bed.

  • Genmitsu 3018 owner with thick blocks: the Genmitsu 2-pack.
  • Sheet goods at every corner: the 4-pack or a side-clamp set.
  • LUNYEE Pro Max or Pro Ultra: the LUNYEE mini hold-down made for that bed.

Mixing styles is common on a 3018. Hold-downs grip the blank while the roughing passes clear material, then side clamps take over for a finishing or engraving pass across the full face, once the hold-downs are removed.

Before ordering, measure your T-slot width, note the tallest stock you cut and check how high your Z rises above the bed.

Setup questions

Do the 2-pack and 4-pack use the same clamp?

No. The 2-pack is a 6061 aluminium clamp for stock up to 45 mm; the 4-pack is a smaller zinc-aluminium clamp for stock up to 30 mm.

Will they fit a non-Genmitsu 3018?

They fit beds with a T-slot the slot block can enter. Measure your slot width first, since it varies between makers.

Do I need a wrench?

No. Both packs tighten with a hand knob.

Can the spindle hit them?

Yes, if the clearance height is set only above the stock. The clamps stand 50–56 mm tall, so set clearance above them or route around them.
